SOMBRILLA Project: Year in Review and New Opportunities

12/31/20251 min read

Over the past three years, the SOMBRILLA Project has become a reliable partner for Ukrainian communities in advancing energy independence, climate resilience, and environmental development.

Results of Our Joint Work (2023–2025)
Over three years, the SOMBRILLA expert team, together with local communities, developed 43 strategic documents, including Municipal Energy Plans (MEPs) and Environmental Safety and Climate Change Adaptation Strategies (ESCAS).

These strategic solutions are already helping communities to:

  • Save: reduce energy consumption and optimize local budget expenditures.

  • Develop: transition to renewable energy sources (RES).

  • Attract: build investment project portfolios for international donors.

  • Protect: strengthen climate resilience of territories.

Partner Communities in 2025
This year, we successfully finalized work with the following communities:

  • Dnipropetrovsk region: Verbkivska, Verkhnodniprovska, Mahdalynivska Hromadas

  • Kirovohrad region: Dolynska Hromada

  • Mykolaiv region: Kobleve Hromada

  • Poltava region: Dykanska Hromada

  • Rivne region: Zdolbunivska, Radyvylivska, Rokytnivska Hromadas

  • Cherkasy region: Khrystynivska Hromada

At the final stage of implementation are the following communities:
Shakhtarska (Dnipropetrovsk region), Novoselivska (Poltava region), Bereznivska (Rivne region), Pechenizka (Kharkiv region), and Chudeyska (Chernivtsi region).

New Horizons 2026: SOMBRILLA and the “Green Path”
In 2026, the SOMBRILLA Project will not only continue its mission but also significantly expand expert support through synergy with new initiatives.

Key plans for 2026 include:

  1. Partnership with “Parasol Green Path”: SOMBRILLA will closely cooperate with this new project of the RCERBS Foundation and the NGO Center for International Cooperation and Project Implementation (Kyiv) in the field of waste management.

  2. Priority for existing partners: Communities that have previously cooperated with the SOMBRILLA Project will, upon their consent, be automatically selected for the development of Waste Management Plans and preparation of “green” feasibility studies (FS).

  3. Strategy implementation: Support for implementing developed MEPs and ESCAS, as well as assistance in attracting investments.

We firmly believe that this integrated approach — from energy to waste management — will become a solid foundation for Ukraine’s sustainable recovery.

The SOMBRILLA team sincerely thanks all partner communities and project experts for their professional dialogue and openness to innovation.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
We wish you peace, resilience, energy independence, and the successful implementation of all green projects in 2026.
